SkypeWeb
Yesterday, Skype announced their SkypeWeb product to project presence onto web sites and enable Skype calls to be initiated by clicking the presence icon from the web site. This concept is not particularly new, Yahoo! and AOL have made this feature available on their networks for years. Nor is the concept particularly broadly applicable given numerous limitations, both site visitor and advertiser must use Skype, as one notable example. Nevertheless, I believe it rather important for many reasons.
As reported here earlier, eBay & Skype -- Reducing Friction of Commerce, eBays' acquisition of Skype seems strategically planned for eBay to provide presence-enabled advertisingon eBay and the many eBay network properties. SkypeWeb strikes me as another logical step in that direction.

I've been using both ContactAtOnce! and Skype for awhile. I checked out SkypeWeb when I saw your blog. From my perspective, as an advertiser, I see many obvious differences between ContactAtOnce! and SkypeWeb including:
• The customer must have Skype on their PC to contact me via the website icon. If customer clicks and do not have Skype installed they are prompted to download and install Skype. This is inconvenient for my customers.
• The icon always shows your Skype status. There is no option to become invisible. I prefer the default ContactAtOnce! option of invisible. I’d rather not advertise “I’m not here”! to my customers.
• Voice option is only VoIP not PPCall. The calls don’t originate or terminate on regular phones.
• Only a single recipient to receive the chat/call can be associated with the icon, so not "any available agent" like ContactAtOnce!. Since, I have several sales reps that won’t really work for me.
• I like to see the reporting of all leads delivered from my site and the sites that I advertise on. It helps me understand the value of my advertising spend. Can’t do that with Skype.
